Do you feel like you’re running out of space? Below we talk about a number of space-saving ideas in your home.
It doesn’t matter how much space we have, we always, somehow, manage to fill it! If you are running out of room, then we have some super space saving ideas for you!
1. Curb Clutter
Although surrounding yourself with all your worldly possessions is lovely and homely, it’s not always practical. A good clear out can help to cut down on clutter and raise a few pennies too if you sell items that are no longer needed. When having a good sort out put things into ‘Keep’, ‘Recycle’ and ‘Sell’ piles, you might need to be a little ruthless!
2. Storage Solutions
Utilise underbed storage, space saving bags and beautiful baskets to store items and keep them from view, giving the illusion of spaciousness.
In the bathroom consider adding a cupboard to sit under and around the sink to store all your toiletries and in the kitchen you can create drawer space by moving your cooking utensils into a big pot and placing on your worktop.
3. Use Your Space Practically
If space is at a premium, think practically. The backs of doors make great hanging spaces, add sets of over the door hooks to hang robes or coats – make sure your set has a flat edge for over the door, they won’t be quite as effective if you can’t close the door. Those shoe storage hangers readily found at IKEA can be used to store anything and everything – not just shoes, if you have a few spare pockets use them to store belts, scarves and gloves!
Shelving to take items from off the floor and up the wall is always a good space saver, consider tall bookcases, cubed storage units and even shelf ladders.
4. Multifunction Furniture
Need the spare bedroom as a workspace? No problem! Use a sofa bed instead of a bed to create a workspace during the day that can be turned into a bedroom for overnight guests. For further multipurpose ideas, try tables that lift to reveal storage space underneath, a divan bed with drawers to store clothing and shoes, a blanket box used as end of bed seating or a trunk ideal to keep cosy blankets in as a coffee table. Drop-leaf tables with foldaway chairs work well in more compact spaces too.
Final tip! When looking for space saving ideas, cast an impartial eye over your home. Can furniture be re-arranged so that it works better? Can items be put away so that the area looks less busy?
