New bids to reform private rented sector
There is a proposal by some Tory MPs supporting a new private member’s Bill where private tenants registering for council tax would give details of the tenure and their landlord.
The new private members Bill has been proposed with the objective of rooting out bad landlords by making private tenants registering for council tax give details of the tenure and their landlord. This has the support of some Tory and Labour MP’s.
A second Bill has also been presented to amend the Landlord and Tenant Act 1985, so that residential rented accommodation must be “provided and maintained in a state of fitness for human habitation”.
Bills that are presented do not often have much support and therefore nothing comes of them but these 2 have growing support from both main parties and could signal the start of better legislation of the Private Rented Sector and therefore better housing conditions which would be very welcome.
