Councillors last night decided to allow controversial plans to build thousands of homes at Lubbesthorpe.
At a packed meeting at Blaby District Council’s headquarters in Narborough, members of the planning committee debated the development of 4,250 homes, plus factories, offices, schools and shops, near Leicester Forest East.

After more than three hours of debate, the recorded vote was 13 in favour of passing the application, and four against.
The decision means that the plans will now go to the Secretary of State, who will decide whether to allow them through or to hold a public inquiry.
Residents’ Disappointment as New Housing Development Receives Approval
The decision was met with great disappointment by residents at the meeting.
Michael Blunt, of Braunstone Lane, said: “It’s always the ones with the most money who get their way. Residents haven’t been listened to at all.”
His wife Pat said: “I just don’t believe it. I’m stunned. How can they (councillors) sleep at night, knowing what their decision will do to people?”
Earlier, politicians and members of the public had spoken against the 973-acre development.
Paul Fox, of Leicester Forest East Residents’ Action Group said: “Opinion is massively against this development.
“Only three people of 1,371 commenting in the latest consultation were in favour of this – that’s 0.2 per cent.”
A spokesman for the developers argued the development would provide an “attractive new community” with schools, shops and 850 low-cost houses among the 4,250.
