Labour on collision course with lettings industry

With only 13 weeks to go until the general election Labour has reiterated policies first started last year, promising to introduce standard three-year contracts, stop letting agents charging some fees and capping rent increases for those on longer term contracts.

Now the party claims renters will save at least £2.5 billion in total – the equivalent of £624 each – under the five year term of a Labour government, if one is elected.

“There are now nine million renting their home and many of them are young people or families just starting out in life. This ‘generation rent’ has been ignored and let down by this government. The amount needed for a deposit on a home has risen beyond the reach of millions of young people and families starting out” says party leader Ed Miliband.

Labour housing spokeswoman Emma Reynolds says those renting from private landlords were getting unfair treatment.

“Renters have to work two days a week – the equivalent of working every day until the May 28 this year – before they pay the rent. In return they get no stability, poor standards and they have to pay hundreds of pounds in rip-off letting agent fees.”

Earlier this week Conservative leader David Cameron and Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg backed longer rental contracts but did not support caps on rental increases.

Labour – which is running neck-and-neck with the Conservatives in polls ahead of the May 7 election – is making special campaign visits involving high-profile MPs to those constituencies identified as having a large number of private sector tenants.

Here at Belvoir Lettings West Derby, we have noticed a raise in ‘long standing tenants’ and agree that longer tenancy term contracts should be available for people looking for a ‘stable’ home.

Here at Belvoir Lettings West Derby we are focused on our customer service, and strive to offer both our landlords and tenants the best possible service. We do not charge tenancy renewal fees (unless tenants have a change in circumstances where they will need to be referenced) and after the initial six month tenancy agreement (if both the landlord and tenant are happy) we do offer a longer fixed term agreement (further 6, 12, 18, 24 month contract).
