Winter weather is unpredictable and it’s not always possible to make last minute preparations when a storm hits. We looked at some of the easy precautions every homeowner can take to prepare a property before the weatherman sends his warning.
Check your roof
Make sure there aren’t any loose tiles and slates or pre-existing damage to the roof. Damaged areas could worsen significantly during storms and could let water in. Do this at least once before and after the winter season.
Gutters
Damaged or blocked gutters won’t function properly and cause an overflow that can seep into the foundation. Check the gutters for any cracks or debris to minimise the chances of water damage to your property. Secure the gutters safely to the property as heavy snow can put added pressure on the gutters.
Pipes
It’s wise to insulate external pipes to avoid them from freezing. Also make sure all pipes are in working order to avoid bursts or leaks.
Secure loose objects
The last thing you want is flying chairs and garden gnomes during a storm. Loose items can cause serious damage to a property when gale force winds are present. Secure any loose items or even better, place it indoors.
Secure windows and doors
Make sure all windows and doors are sturdy and secure. It’s also important to check the sealant around windows to avoid water from coming in.
Insurance
Worst case scenarios are always a possibility with something as unpredictable as the weather. It’s important to have insurance in place and to understand the terms of your contract.
