What is the Armchair Club?
The Armchair Club was founded in 1982 when a group of six local businessmen got together to help raise and distribute financial support to the benefit of local sports people.
The Foundation aims to back community involvement in amateur sport through funding and providing facilities, equipment and support that will encourage the development of sport and also young people’s desire to participate in sport.
The club’s ethos from its beginning in 1982 is to see sport grow and flourish in the Mansfield and Ashfield areas and to enable people of all ages and ability to take part and enjoy life through sport. Since it’s launch, the club has raised over £210,000 for Mansfield’s sporting community – pretty impressive!
The Armchair Club has no Chairman, Secretary or Treasurer and has no formal structure; they just do whatever is necessary. They meet most months to organise events and consider requests for support from local individuals and organisations.
Belvoir Mansfield and the Armchair Club
We care a lot about Mansfield and the people in it, and we understand how important it is for people to get involved with things they love doing and to encourage healthy, active lifestyles, especially through sports.
We echo the ethos of the Armchair Club and this is the reason why we have been lucky enough to have sponsored a few events for rising stars at the Armchair Club.
Back in December, we sponsored the Sports Recognition Awards, which is an annual ceremony organised by the Mansfield District Council in association with The Armchair Club, the Chad and supported by the Schools Advisory Service.
The purpose of this yearly event is to recognise the District’s sporting greats, including the best teams, coaches, volunteers, sportsmen and sportswomen.
Branch Manager, Nick presented the ‘Junior Sports Leader of the Year’ Award to Anais Johnson, who is committed to the leadership programme and shown a great deal of maturity and enthusiasm.
Anais is described as a good leader who has developed new skills and confidence throughout the Mansfield Leadership programme. She represented the Academy at the Notts School Games and also supported the event logistics.
Her commitment has also been apparent at her Secondary School – Samworth Church Academy, where she has led Primary School Netball Competitions and coached sessions at a local Primary School, which resulted in the school winning the district Netball Competition and representing Mansfield in the County event, where Anais was Team Manager.
Aside from the Sports Recognition Awards, The Armchair Club holds various other events, ranging from ‘A Question of Sport’, golfing events and Balls. The club also has ties to many famous Mansfield faces, including Rebecca Adlington, Charlotte Hensshaw, Sam Hynd, Oliver Hynd and Oliver Wilson, to name a few.
