Belvoir Sheffield, leading letting agent in Sheffield is issuing a stark warning to landlords to adhere to the regulations, after an Edinburgh man was told he can no longer operate as a residential landlord after the local council used its power to remove him from the landlord register.
This was the first time ever that this power has been used by Edinburgh Council and was enforced after Councillors decided that he did not meet the fit and proper person criteria, leaving the man in question unable to operate as a residential landlord in Edinburgh.
Councillors heard evidence that the man in question had failed to adequately tell them about his criminal convictions and defied previous decisions of the Council where he continued to rent out HMO properties whilst not holding a licence.
Rick Flay, Director at Belvoir Sheffield, who offer a wide range of houses to rent in Sheffield, said: “This case should be a stark warning to landlords who have just started their property portfolios, to ensure that they are fully aware of what is expected of them. In the UK there is no licensing as of yet, but landlords are required to adhere to a large list of legal requirements before letting out a property to a tenant.”
Councillor Gavin Barrie, Convenor of the Regulatory Committee, said earlier this week: “I would encourage any tenant looking for a property to rent through a reputable letting agent such as Belvoir Sheffield to avoid rogue landlords.

Many DIY landlords are unaware that they need to register their details to be allowed to let out a property in the first place.
