Welcome to my blog, Rumbles Blog. The blog of probably the most knowledgable English Bulldog you will ever meet!
Over Easter I’ve been busy putting together a list of what I think are ten great things to do and places to visit in Sheffield. Not a complete list and in no particular order, this is my list of ten great things to do in Sheffield.daisy spring works,
Botanical Gardens
The Sheffield Botanical Gardens lay hidden away inbetween Ecclesall Road and Clarkehouse Roadand really demonstrates why Sheffield is a green city. The gardens were originally designed in 1836 by Robert Marnock and garden covers 19 acres with 15 different areas, including plants from all over the world. Its a great place to spread your legs for a run around and so close to the city centre.
If you like this area, then there are also some great properties available right next door.
Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife and Falconry Centre
Now I’m going on what I’ve heard with this one as dogs are not allowed (can’t think why), but the Tropical Butterfly House located in North Anston is a Sheffield attraction that not many people know about. A world of animals from lemurs, meerkats, owls, otters, snakes, lizards, as well as free-flying birds of prey, parrots and charismatic mammals!
Sheffield Parks
Sheffield has a great number of superb parks covering all the different suburbs. Graves Park is located close to Norton and Woodseats to the south of the city and includes the renowned Graves Park Animal Farm. Endcliffe Park is located of Rustlings Road in Sheffield S11 and is extremely popular as well as being listed on the English Heritage’s National Register of Historic Parks & Gardens, well worth a visit.
Sheffield Winter Gardens
The Sheffield Winter Gardens is one of the largest temperate glasshouses to be built in the UK during the last hundred years and it is right in the heart of Sheffield City Centre, bang next door to the Sheffield Peace Gardens and the Millennium Galleries. Its just a great place to visit, sit and take in the atmosphere and the building, and there is normally plenty going on. There are more than 2,500 plants from around the world creating a superb display.
Millennium Galleries
Right next door to the Winter Gardens is the renowned Sheffield Millenium Galleries, which houses a wide range of art, craft, and design exhibitions including Sheffield’s unique metalwork and Ruskin collections.
If you like this part of the City Centre there are also plenty of properties available to both buy and rent, just like this one in the St Pauls Square Development.
Sheffield Theatres
Sheffield is home to both the world famous Crucible Theatre and the historic Lyceum Theatre. The Crucible hosts a wide range of plays and family entertainment throughout the year and of course is well know as the home of the World Snooker Championship every April. The Lyceum Theatre underwent an extensive refurbishment in 2013 and is a very impressive building with a wide range of plays throughout the year.
Kelham Island Museum
One of Sheffield most popular attractions, Kelham Island Museum is located in one of the city’s oldest industrial districts and houses the objects, pictures and archive material representing Sheffield’s industrial story. There are also some great developments in this area in case you are looking for a property in Kelham Island, such as this great apartment to rent at Daisy Spring Works.
Sheffield Western Park Museum
Located at Western Park the Western Park Museum tells the story ofSheffield. From its roots, the people, the politics, and the music that has shaped the city. I’m sure as a leading dog of the city I will also be featured in future years. Its free as well!
Rivelin Valley Nature Trail
If you leave Sheffield to head out to the Peak District to the West of the city then you may head out through the Rivelin Valley. Another great example of how green Sheffield is as a city and how close you are to stunning countryside, a great place for a dog to spread his little legs. The Rivelin Valley Nature Trail is a great place to relax and enjoy the local Sheffield countryside.
Shopping
If you like shopping then Sheffield also has everything you could possibly want. The city centre is full of fantastic shops, from the central shopping areas of The Moor and Fargate, to the quirky independent shops that can be found in the Devonshire Quarter areas, mixed in with great bars and restaurants.
Of course, if you are after more of a shopping centre experience, then the renowned Meadowhall Shopping Centre is located just 10 minutes out to the East of the city close to the M1.
So thats just some of my tips on what to see and do in Sheffield. Whether you are a dog or a human, there is something in this list for you,Sheffield is a great city.
