Women More Eager To Buy Property- Just Not In Sheffield Claim Belvoir Lettings

Almost two million women aged between 18 and 34 are looking to buy their first property in the immediate future, and are buying at a much younger age than their male counterparts, a new study has shown. Despite this, Belvoir Sheffield, the leading letting agents in Sheffield, claim that it is a much different picture in South Yorkshire, where local research bucks UK wide trends.

The original report released by the Post Office reveals that around 1.8 million women are now looking to buy in the not too distance future and that female buyers are, on average, a year younger than male buyers.

Rick Flay from Belvoir Sheffield, which specialises in providing flats to rent in Sheffield said: “The new report was extremely interesting because although it did show regional differences, women were still stated as being more likely to buy than men.

“The report found that women buying in Sunderland are, on average, nine years younger than men, which is a huge difference, but the report does not state whether it merely asks both sexes who would like to buy or who actually bought in the various areas. According to our own figures here at Belvoir Sheffield, men are still the top buyers in the area and this has always been the case.”

When asked what they would sacrifice to get onto the property ladder, the Post Office report indicated that ‘some 37 per-cent of women said they were most happy to forego buying in a trendy area. But security of the area where the property is located was the factor women were least likely to compromise on. Just 17 per-cent say they would settle for an area they don’t feel as safe in.’

Men on the other hand were reported as saying ‘they were more willing to sacrifice outside space and being in a family area to get their foot on the ladder than women, 31 per-cent of men versus 24 per-cent of women. Women said they were happier to compromise on closeness to a city or city centre, 31 per-cent versus 23 per-cent of men’

Rick, whose lettings agency helps those wanting to rent property in Sheffield, continued: “Perhaps if the study was asking those who are not already on the property ladder their opinions on buying, then I do think that women would have been at the top of the survey. However, if we are talking about those who can afford to actually buy, men are top of the polls in Sheffield.”
