Moving house is often said to be one of the most stressful things you do in life; with that in mind, it’s important to be organised. The simplest way to do this, of course, is to have a thorough list to hand and check everything off as you go. Where might you find such a list? Why, right here!
Before The Move
[ ] Confirm your moving date.
[ ] Check or arrange your contents insurance – make sure it covers you from the date you move in.
[ ] Confirm your removal arrangements – if you’re using professionals, get a number of quotes before you book. If you’re getting your friends to help, make sure they know the date and will definitely be free!
[ ] Notify all the utility companies.
[ ] Have a clear out – there’s no point moving stuff you don’t need!
[ ] Order any new furniture or carpets you’re going to need, so that they can be delivered when you move in.
[ ] Arrange a post office re-direct – this does carry a charge, but ensures you won’t miss any mail.
[ ] Pack non-essential items well in advance – this will save you hassle later!
[ ] Make a list of everybody who needs to know your new address, and tick them off as you tell them.
The First Day Kit
The first day is always the most stressful – everything’s in boxes, you can’t find anything you need, you feel you might start screaming at everyone… Relax. Pack yourself a First Day Kit the night before, and you’ll be more organised than Batman.
[ ] First Aid Kit.
[ ] Medications – including painkillers for that moving day headache.
[ ] Phone chargers.
[ ] Lightbulbs – check what fittings are in your new place in advance.
[ ] Torch.
[ ] Scissors/craft knife – basically something to open all your boxes with!
[ ] An extension cord or two.
[ ] Toolkit – especially screwdrivers and Allen keys, which you might need for your furniture.
[ ] Toilet paper!
[ ] Hand towels.
[ ] Rubbish bags.
[ ] Paper towels.
[ ] Notebook, pen & Post-It notes.
[ ] A change of clothes for everyone in the family.
[ ] Toiletries – don’t forget your toothbrush!
[ ] Alarm – essential if you have to get to work the day after moving in!
[ ] A kettle and enough disposable or non-breakable plates, cups and utensils for everyone involved (not just the family – think of your movers and helpers too!).
[ ] Teabags, coffee, UHT milk (because you don’t know when your fridge will be set up) and sugar.
You may also want to include enough supplies for a basic meal – or look up a good local takeaway for your first night.
With those essentials to hand, the first day should be a breeze. After that – well, it depends on how thoroughly you’ve labelled all your boxes!
Things To Do
When you get to your new place, there are a couple of vital things to do before you start unpacking.
[ ] Check the inventory provided by your landlord.
[ ] Check the meter readings for electricity, gas, etc.
[ ] Change the fob on your keys – landlords often attach the address to the keys so they know they’re handing over the right ones, but you don’t want to keep this on for security reasons.
