Tenants Guide to Moving House

Moving house is stressful at the best of times; there are so many things to think about and so much paperwork to wade through. For renting a property it’s slightly easier, and as a well established letting agent in Sutton Coldfield, we at Belvoir have plenty of experience in making house moving as smooth as possible. To help tenants moving into their brand new rented accommodation, we thought we’d share a couple of tips to make your move a little bit easier.

Lists

It’s easy to get bogged down in note pads and sticky notes full of lists of what you do and don’t need in your new rented accommodation. Here’s one tip to help you narrow down that list; if you’re unsure, ask.

It sounds simple, but many tenants either forget to ask about white goods or simply assume they will be in place. This is not the case for many rented accommodations; sometimes your landlord won’t supply you with white goods, curtains or lightshades. It’s always best to ask your agent before you spend your hard-earned money buying items the landlord has already supplied for you.

Surroundings

Always check your surroundings. Even before moving into a property, it’s best to check you have a designated area for parking or for your guests to park in. Your agent will tell you this and they will point out- if it is on street parking- whether or not you have to get a parking and/or visitors permit. These are easy to get hold of; simply head over to your town hall with the relevant documents to secure a permit. Don’t expect your landlord to supply you with one of these; you’re renting the house from them after all, not an on street parking space.

Decorating

Be sure to read through your contract very carefully when it comes to decorating your home. Some landlords don’t mind you painting the walls and hammering nails into the walls, so long as they are easy to remove and won’t damage the property, while other landlords will prefer  you to leave the property exactly as it is.  If you’re unsure about decorating ask your agent or landlord.
